Setup for a new highback golden arowana
I got my asian arowana on April 26, 2021. It is a highback golden arowana from
an Indonesian farm. When I went to the pet store to buy the arowana, I had the
options of highback, 24K crossback, and golden helmet. I noticed that the
super highback was the most responsive to humans, i.e., the presence of us near
its tank, whereas the others did not much respond to us. Based on that, I
decided to go for it, and bought the super highback. The arowana came with a chip in it and a certificate from the Indonesian farm where it was bred. The arowana was quite
relaxed and did not jump on the hour-long journey to its new home.
I put the
arowana in my present tank having dimensions 3 ft X 1.5 ft X 1.5 ft which
translates to 62 gallons (235 litres) water capacity. While this tank is not
adequate for a full grown arowana, I only intend to use it as a temporary tank
for and will soon upgrade to a bigger 8ft or 6ft tank in few months. For the
present 3 ft tank, I am using Sun Sun 304B cannister filter. The flow rate of
the filter is 525 GPH/hour and is designed to handle fish tanks of 150-200
gallon capacity. I also have oxygen pump and LED lights.
Initially, I had few
decorations and river rocks (pebbles) in the tank along with a dozen tiger
barbs. Within first nine/ten hours, the arowana had eaten two of the tiger barbs
and so I decided to put the remaining tiger barbs in another tank. Since the arowana was very active and
swam through all volume of the tank, I also removed the decorations and the
river rocks. Then I bought two pieces of glasses as lids for the tank. I made
the tank bare bottom and put vinyl on both side ends of the tank. I did not,
however, put vinyl on the back end of the tank as the arowana apparently enjoys
watching out of the window behind the tank.
Since, this is my first time of keeping an arowana as a pet, I am still researching on the care to be taken and the requirements for keeping the arowana healthy. Any suggestions to help me keep the arowana, are welcome :D
